Sun in Vedic astrology

The Sun, or Surya, represents authority, self-direction, courage and the responsibility attached to a position. Traditional readings also use it as a natural significator of the father.

A question about taking charge draws on the Sun's authority theme. A question about a parent draws on a different signification. Neither can be answered by treating the Sun as a complete description of the person: its house responsibilities and relationships give the reading its setting.

The displayed Moolatrikona range is Leo, 0° to under 20°. The dignity reference explains how degree ranges take priority over broader sign labels.

Reading the chart

The Sun is a luminary. It is never retrograde in this geocentric zodiac display, and it is the reference for combustion rather than a graha marked combust itself.

A Sun-sign label refers only to the Sun’s position. The lagna and Moon can be in other signs. The Sun’s house and its Leo house lordship add information that a Sun-sign label omits.

For Cancer lagna, Leo is house 2, making the Sun the second lord. This schematic lordship is true whatever house the Sun occupies.

Sign-ruler checks

For placements without a separate guide, this table gives the narrower sign relationship. Natural friendship is read from Sun towards the ruler and need not be mutual. It is separate from the Positions dignity label Neutral and from temporary friendship.

Occupied sign Sign ruler Natural relationship
Aries Mars Friend
Taurus Venus Enemy
Gemini Mercury Neutral
Cancer Moon Friend
Leo Sun Own ruler
Virgo Mercury Neutral
Libra Venus Enemy
Scorpio Mars Friend
Sagittarius Jupiter Friend
Capricorn Saturn Enemy
Aquarius Saturn Enemy
Pisces Jupiter Friend

For the combined relationship shown in the chart, see natural and temporary friendship.
