Books
Books for Panchang and Kundli
These four books provide context for the traditional classifications and birth-chart rules referenced on panchang.now. Each guide explains the book's subject, its connection to the site and a starting point for reading it.
For the daily calendar, begin with Brihat Samhita and the Panchang reading guide. For the sources named in a Kundli, the other three books concern birth-chart astrology.
Brihat Samhita
Author: Varahamihira · Panchang classifications and traditional timing
A Sanskrit compendium with a much wider scope than the daily calendar. Its discussions of nakshatras, tithis and karanas help explain the activity groups used in the site's traditional Panchang guides.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra
Traditionally attributed to Parashara · Birth-chart foundations
Often abbreviated to BPHS, this text discusses planets, signs, houses, divisions, yogas and planetary periods. It is one of the sources named in the Kundli page's conventions.
Phaladeepika
Author: Mantreswara · Planetary combinations and chart reading
A text on birth-chart interpretation, including planetary strengths, house placements and named yogas. Its yoga chapter is relevant to several combinations listed in a Kundli, including the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas.
Saravali
Author: Kalyana Varma · Planetary placements and chart patterns
A work on birth-chart astrology covering signs, planetary combinations and the distribution of planets across a chart. Its Nabhasa yoga discussion is particularly relevant to the chart-pattern section of a Kundli.
Reading a source alongside the site
A book title identifies the work; a chapter, verse and named edition help locate a particular passage. Translations can differ in wording and numbering. The book guides retain those details where a specific passage is used.
For the meaning of today's calendar rows, start with how to understand the Panchang. The book pages add context to those explanations.
