Rahu in Vedic astrology
Rahu is the ascending lunar node, a crossing of the Moon’s orbital plane and the ecliptic. It is a calculated point, not a physical planet. Rahu and Ketu lie on opposite ends of the nodal axis.
Rahu is associated with strong desire, ambition and an attraction to what lies outside familiar experience. A traditional reading may consider both the drive to pursue something and the dissatisfaction that remains after obtaining it.
Seeking a new source of recognition illustrates this theme; moving the goal immediately after receiving recognition illustrates its possible difficulty. The example explains the symbolism without assigning that behaviour to everyone with a particular Rahu placement.
Mean and true positions
The default is mean node; the alternative is true node. True-node oscillation can briefly give Rahu a forward D mark and can change its sign or pada near a boundary. The node-model explanation covers what the selector changes.
Rulership, dignity and aspects
Rahu's Neutral dignity means that this chart does not assign a node dignity, not that Rahu has no interpretive significance. Traditions disagree over node exaltation and co-rulership. Rahu has no individual Ashtakavarga bindus or Shadbala total here; blank is not zero.
The displayed fifth, seventh and ninth node aspects are one convention among several. Rahu is absent from the seven-graha chara-karaka scheme and included in the eight-graha version, with its degree counted backwards.
Reading a node placement
Rahu's sign ruler supplies an important relationship because this chart gives Rahu no ordinary sign ownership. For Rahu in Taurus, for example, Venus is the dispositor and Ketu occupies Scorpio. That geometry establishes the axis; it does not establish what Rahu's desire theme means in a particular life.
Rahu's inclusion in the eight-graha chara-karaka scheme is a separate role based on degree. It should not be treated as an extra sign ruler.
Sign and house checks
Rahu and Ketu remain 180° apart. In D1 whole-sign counting, houses 1 and 7 pair, as do 2 and 8, 3 and 9, 4 and 10, 5 and 11, and 6 and 12. Reversing which node occupies a house preserves the geometry, not the symbolic meaning.
| Rahu sign | Sign ruler to inspect | Ketu sign |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Libra |
| Taurus | Venus | Scorpio |
| Gemini | Mercury | Sagittarius |
| Cancer | Moon | Capricorn |
| Leo | Sun | Aquarius |
| Virgo | Mercury | Pisces |
| Libra | Venus | Aries |
| Scorpio | Mars | Taurus |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | Gemini |
| Capricorn | Saturn | Cancer |
| Aquarius | Saturn | Leo |
| Pisces | Jupiter | Virgo |
The ruler is a separate graha with its own placement and condition. This lookup does not assign a universal node dignity or a personality effect to each sign. A chalit house assignment uses different boundaries and should not be substituted into this whole-sign axis count.
