Yogini, Ashtottari and Chara dashas
The Other dashas section provides additional traditional period frameworks. Their labels and starting rules differ from Vimshottari; a disagreement between lord names is not necessarily a calculation error.
Yogini
Yogini has eight named periods totalling 36 years. A Yogini name is not always the same as its graha lord.
| Yogini | Graha | Full period |
|---|---|---|
| Mangala | Moon | 1 year |
| Pingala | Sun | 2 years |
| Dhanya | Jupiter | 3 years |
| Bhramari | Mars | 4 years |
| Bhadrika | Mercury | 5 years |
| Ulka | Saturn | 6 years |
| Siddha | Venus | 7 years |
| Sankata | Rahu | 8 years |
The birth Moon's nakshatra sets the starting Yogini and the remaining balance. Expanding a period reveals its subperiods. Cycle marks a repeat of the same sequence; “now” marks the interval running at the request time. A name such as Sankata is not a prediction of a crisis.
Ashtottari
Ashtottari uses eight lords over 108 years: Sun 6, Moon 15, Mars 8, Mercury 17, Saturn 10, Jupiter 19, Rahu 12 and Venus 21. Ketu is absent. Its nakshatra-group arrangement includes the Abhijit convention; it must not be substituted into the 27-equal-nakshatra Vimshottari sequence.
The page reports two applicability checks: Rahu in a kendra or trikona from the lagna lord's sign but not in lagna; and birth during Krishna paksha by day or Shukla paksha by night. Day/night cannot be checked when the necessary rise and set events are unavailable.
Yes or no beside a condition reports whether that test is met. The periods are displayed even when a condition is not met. The table does not silently choose which school's applicability rule the reader should adopt.
Chara
Chara periods name signs, not graha lords. The first major period begins from lagna at birth. The sequence runs forward for Aries, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius and Pisces lagnas, and backwards for the others in the convention used here.
A sign's duration depends on the position of its lord and the applicable counting direction. A lord in its own sign gives twelve years. This version does not add or subtract a year for exaltation or debilitation. Scorpio and Aquarius use a co-lord comparison for this calculation, a separate convention from the seven-graha house-lord table.
Each major period is divided into twelve equal sign subperiods. Later cycles repeat the chosen sign sequence and durations here. Other Chara conventions can differ, so compare the actual convention before comparing dates.
Chara karakas
The adjacent table compares roles assigned by degree within the sign, highest first. Seven karakas uses Sun through Saturn; Eight karakas adds Rahu with its degree counted backwards from 30°. Ketu is absent from both.
| Role | Traditional reference |
|---|---|
| Atmakaraka | Self; highest-ranked graha |
| Amatyakaraka | Counsel, activity and support |
| Bhratrikaraka | Siblings |
| Matrikaraka | Mother |
| Pitrikaraka | Father; eight-karaka scheme only |
| Putrakaraka | Children |
| Gnatikaraka | Kin, rivals and difficulties |
| Darakaraka | Partner; lowest-ranked graha |
Pitrikaraka's seven-karaka cell is intentionally blank. These role names are not assessments of actual relatives. Equal rounded degrees may conceal a finer ordering; the comparison uses the full positions.
All three systems use the chart's stated clock context and the 365.25-day dasha year. Period dates and role names supply a framework, not a personal forecast.
See the chart and its tables on the Kundli page.
