Mercury in Vedic astrology

Mercury, or Budha, concerns speech, reasoning, learning and acquired skill. Its traditional symbolism includes explaining, comparing and making practical use of information.

An articulate explanation illustrates one Mercury theme, but fluency does not establish that the explanation is correct. The chart's associations and house lordship distinguish the subject being discussed; Mercury is not a standalone measure of intelligence or educational attainment.

The displayed Moolatrikona range is Virgo, 16° to under 20°. The dignity reference explains how degree ranges take priority over broader sign labels.

Reading the chart

Mercury can be retrograde or combust. Its combustion limit differs between direct and retrograde motion in the tool, so two similar separations from the Sun need not produce the same flag.

Mercury’s natural benefic classification is conditional in the yoga rules: sharing a sign with a malefic changes it. This technical grouping is separate from a judgment about intelligence or honesty.

In a schematic Cancer-lagna D1, Mercury rules houses 3 and 12. Its general learning symbolism does not erase those particular house roles.

Sign-ruler checks

For placements without a separate guide, this table gives the narrower sign relationship. Natural friendship is read from Mercury towards the ruler and need not be mutual. It is separate from the Positions dignity label Neutral and from temporary friendship.

Occupied sign Sign ruler Natural relationship
Aries Mars Neutral
Taurus Venus Friend
Gemini Mercury Own ruler
Cancer Moon Enemy
Leo Sun Friend
Virgo Mercury Own ruler
Libra Venus Friend
Scorpio Mars Neutral
Sagittarius Jupiter Neutral
Capricorn Saturn Neutral
Aquarius Saturn Neutral
Pisces Jupiter Neutral

For the combined relationship shown in the chart, see natural and temporary friendship.
