Mars in Vedic astrology

Mars, or Mangala, is associated with courage, physical effort, conflict and the force needed to carry an action through. Traditional significations also include siblings and land.

Using effort to overcome resistance is one constructive expression of these themes. Continuing a confrontation after its purpose has been lost is a possible difficulty. The distinction helps explain why Mars is read through its condition and responsibilities, rather than treated as either courage or conflict in every chart.

Reading the chart

Mars has full seventh, fourth and eighth graha aspects in this chart’s convention. These counts begin at Mars’s occupied sign, not at Aries or at the lagna by default.

Manglik is a specific Mars-placement test counted from lagna, Moon and Venus. It is not a complete account of Mars and does not establish compatibility or harm to a partner.

A schematic Mars in Libra aspects Capricorn, Aries and Taurus under the stated sign-count rule. The houses those signs occupy depend on the lagna.

Sign-ruler checks

For placements without a separate guide, this table gives the narrower sign relationship. Natural friendship is read from Mars towards the ruler and need not be mutual. It is separate from the Positions dignity label Neutral and from temporary friendship.

Occupied sign Sign ruler Natural relationship
Aries Mars Own ruler
Taurus Venus Neutral
Gemini Mercury Enemy
Cancer Moon Friend
Leo Sun Friend
Virgo Mercury Enemy
Libra Venus Neutral
Scorpio Mars Own ruler
Sagittarius Jupiter Friend
Capricorn Saturn Neutral
Aquarius Saturn Neutral
Pisces Jupiter Friend

For the combined relationship shown in the chart, see natural and temporary friendship.
