Transits

Your birth chart is fixed. What is a transit?

A birth chart is one moment and never changes; a transit is where a planet is now, counted in its houses. See Saturn and Jupiter move over one chart.

01 · A fixed picture and a moving sky

The birth chart never changes; transits are today’s planets read against it.

The planets inside the ring are where they stood at birth, and they stay there. The marks outside are where Saturn and Jupiter are on a later date. A transit is that later position counted in the birth chart’s houses, from the lagna or from the Moon.

Two skies

A birth chart records the sky at one minute. Once the time and place are fixed, nothing in it moves: the planets, the lagna and the houses stay where they were at birth for the rest of the chart’s use.

The real sky keeps going. A transit (गोचर, gochara) is a planet’s position on some later date, read against the birth chart: which of the chart’s houses it is passing through, and what it meets there. The transiting planet is in the sky today; the house it is counted in belongs to the birth.

Saturn and Jupiter over one chart

Take the fictional chart for 17:05 IST on 1 November 2026 in Delhi, with Aries rising and the Moon in Cancer. Saturn and Jupiter move slowly, so their transits are the easiest to follow:

Date Saturn from lagna from Moon Jupiter from lagna from Moon
1 Jan 2027 Pisces 12 9 Leo 5 2
1 Jul 2028 Aries 1 10 Leo 5 2
1 Jan 2031 Taurus 2 11 Scorpio 8 5

The houses are counted in two ways because traditional transit rules use both. Counting from the lagna uses the chart’s own houses. Counting from the Moon, called Chandra lagna, treats the Moon’s sign as the first house; many classical gochara rules, and Sade Sati, are stated from the Moon.

Slow and fast transits

Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross a sign and Jupiter about one, so their transits last long enough to be read as phases. Both also turn retrograde for months each year and can recross a sign boundary: Jupiter entered Leo on 31 October 2026, went back into Cancer on 25 January 2027 and returned to Leo on 26 June 2027. The Moon, by contrast, crosses a house in about two and a quarter days.

A transit is one of two timing tools in a reading. The other, the dasha, is counted from the birth itself rather than from the sky; dasha and transit compares them. The transit guide explains the Kundli page’s transit table.
