Sade Sati
What does Sade Sati actually track?
Sade Sati is Saturn crossing the three signs centred on the birth Moon. See the signs it counts for one chart, and its dates, with a retrograde return.
01 · Counted from the Moon
Sade Sati is Saturn passing through the three signs centred on the birth Moon.
The birth Moon’s sign is fixed for life. Sade Sati is the stretch when transiting Saturn is in the sign before it, the sign itself or the sign after. Dhaiya is Saturn in the fourth or eighth sign from it.
02 · Saturn’s calendar
About seven and a half years, interrupted when Saturn turns back.
Saturn spends about two and a half years in a sign, so three signs take about seven and a half: the “sade sati”, seven and a half. Retrograde loops carry it back over a boundary, so a phase can stop and start again.
A transit counted from the Moon
Sade Sati is a transit: a statement about where Saturn is in the sky, measured against one fixed point of the birth chart, the Moon’s sign. It is named for its length, sāḍhe sātī, “seven and a half”.
The rule counts three signs:
- First phase: Saturn in the sign before the birth Moon’s, the twelfth from it.
- Second phase: Saturn in the Moon’s own sign.
- Third phase: Saturn in the sign after, the second from it.
Saturn takes about 29½ years to go round the zodiac, about two and a half years a sign, so three signs take about seven and a half years, and the whole pattern comes round again about every 30 years. A related count, dhaiya (“two and a half”), is Saturn in the fourth or eighth sign from the Moon.
Nothing here uses the Sun sign or the rising sign. Two people with the same Moon sign have the same Sade Sati dates, whatever else differs in their charts.
One chart’s dates
The fictional chart for 17:05 IST on 1 November 2026 in Delhi has the Moon in Cancer. Its Sade Sati signs are Gemini, Cancer and Leo, and its dhaiya signs Libra and Aquarius. From the site’s ephemeris:
| Phase | Saturn in | From | To |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | Gemini | 30 May 2032 | 13 Jul 2034 |
| Second | Cancer | 13 Jul 2034 | 27 Aug 2036 |
| Third | Leo | 27 Aug 2036 | 22 Oct 2038 |
| Third, again | Leo | 6 Apr 2039 | 12 Jul 2039 |
Saturn left Leo for Virgo in October 2038, then turned retrograde and came back into Leo for three months in 2039. So this Sade Sati runs about seven years with a five-month break, rather than one unbroken seven and a half. Such returns are common, because Saturn is retrograde for about four and a half months every year.
What it is, and what it is not
Astronomically, Sade Sati is a date range: Saturn’s position relative to a sign chosen at birth. Its significance is traditional, and a reading keeps it tied to the rest of the birth chart rather than giving one outcome to everyone whose Moon is in the same sign. The Sade Sati and dhaiya guide shows how the Kundli page lists the phases.
