Dasha and transit

Dasha and transit: what is the difference?

A dasha is a schedule fixed at birth; a transit is the sky on a later date. See one chart’s dasha periods beside Saturn’s real movement over twenty years.

01 · Two clocks

A dasha is counted from the birth; a transit is read from the sky.

The dasha rows are a schedule fixed at birth by the Moon’s nakshatra: everyone born at that minute has the same one, and nobody else does. The Saturn row is the sky, the same for everyone alive. A reading lays the two side by side.

Two ways of asking “when?”

Jyotisha has two main tools for timing, and they measure different things.

  • A transit is the sky on a later date, read against the birth chart. Saturn’s position in 2035 is the same for everyone alive in 2035; only the house it is counted in differs from chart to chart.
  • A dasha is a schedule of planetary periods that starts at birth. In the Vimshottari system the site uses, the first period belongs to the lord of the Moon’s birth nakshatra, and the rest follow in a fixed order with fixed lengths, as how the first dasha and its balance are found shows. Nothing in the sky has to move for a dasha to change; it is arithmetic on the birth moment.

One chart, twenty years

For the fictional chart of 17:05 IST on 1 November 2026 in Delhi, the Moon is in Pushya, ruled by Saturn. The dasha therefore starts in Saturn’s major period, already partly elapsed at birth, which runs until 10 April 2036. Mercury’s seventeen-year period follows. Each major period is divided into nine sub-periods in the same order, starting from its own lord.

Over the same years, Saturn the planet moves from Pisces through Aries, Taurus and Gemini, and on into Cancer, the birth Moon’s sign, in July 2034. That transit is part of Sade Sati for this chart.

The two Saturns are different things. The Saturn dasha is a period named after the planet; transiting Saturn is the planet itself. In this chart the Saturn dasha ends in 2036 while Saturn the planet is still in Cancer.

Read together

A reading lays the two clocks side by side. One traditional approach treats the dasha as setting which planet’s themes are active and the transits as showing when, within that period, they are prompted; texts differ in how much weight they give each.
