Sun, Moon and rising signs in Kundli
Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign identify three different positions at the same birth moment. They can agree, but there is no requirement that they do.
| Reference | What determines it | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | The Sun's zodiac longitude | Sun row in Positions |
| Moon sign, or Chandra rashi | The Moon's zodiac longitude | Moon row in Positions |
| Rising sign, or lagna | The eastern horizon at that time and place | Lagna row and first D1 house |
Why familiar labels may differ
The chart uses a sidereal zodiac. A Sun-sign label taken from a tropical calendar may therefore differ. Compare the zodiac reference and ayanamsa before assuming the birth details are wrong.
The Moon moves through signs much faster than the Sun. The lagna also changes through the day, with unequal rising intervals. A date without a reliable time and place cannot settle all three references.
Which reference does a reading use?
The D1 House column counts from lagna. The transit table separately gives counts from lagna and the natal Moon. Sade Sati is counted from the natal Moon sign; it is not counted from the Sun sign. The starting Vimshottari lord comes from the Moon's nakshatra, not simply its sign.
These are different uses within traditional astrology, not three competing descriptions of a whole person. Check the reference named by the rule before comparing results.
Today's Moon on a Panchang page describes the current sky. It does not replace the Moon in a birth chart. The transit guide explains how the two are related.
Three different signs in one chart
The worked example has Sun in Capricorn, Moon in Aries and Taurus rising. Its Capricorn Sun does not make Capricorn the first house. Taurus remains the starting point for its whole-sign houses; Aries is the Moon's reference for Moon-based counts.
