Ayanamsa in Kundli

Ayanamsa is the angular difference used to relate tropical and sidereal zodiac longitudes. Sidereal traditions choose their reference differently, so two calculations can give slightly different degrees for the same instant.

Choices on this page

Choice What to compare
True Chitrapaksha The default reference, tied to the position of Spica
Lahiri The conventional Lahiri reference offered as a separate option
KP (Krishnamurti) A different sidereal reference, also selecting the KP/Placidus chalit presentation here

The result summary names the selected ayanamsa and gives its angular value. Compare like-for-like choices when checking another chart. The node selector is a separate setting.

Why a small difference can matter

A position comfortably inside a sign usually keeps its sign under a small reference change. A position near a sign, nakshatra, pada or divisional boundary may cross it. That can change a categorical label even when the numerical longitude changes only slightly.

A changed Moon nakshatra can change the starting dasha lord. A changed lagna sign changes the whole-sign house count. These are boundary effects, not evidence that a person's circumstances changed when an option was selected.

Keep date, time, place, offset and node model fixed when comparing the three choices. The sidereal and tropical guide explains the underlying distinction; the chalit guide explains the additional KP house choice.

No ayanamsa selector establishes that one interpretation is predictively more accurate.

A degree comparison

At 07:40 UTC on 7 February 2003 in Delhi (28.6139° N, 77.2090° E), the fictional example gives these ascendant longitudes, rounded to four decimals:

Reference Longitude Sign
True Chitrapaksha 49.7462° Taurus
Lahiri 49.7310° Taurus
KP 49.8209° Taurus

All three remain in Taurus because the ascendant is well inside the sign. The same size difference near a boundary could change a sign label. These figures illustrate the site's three choices, not a universal difference that stays fixed for every date.
