Arudha padas in Kundli

An arudha pada is a derived sign reference for a house, found through the position of its ruler. Traditional readings use it when considering how a house's matters are manifested or perceived. It is not another astronomical ascendant.

Counting and exceptions

Count signs from the house to its lord, inclusively, then repeat that count from the lord. If the result is the original house, use its tenth instead. If it is opposite the original house, use the fourth from the original house.

For a schematic Cancer lagna with the Moon in Virgo, Virgo is third from Cancer. Counting three from Virgo reaches Scorpio, so A1 is Scorpio. This is a counting fragment, not a complete chart.

Scorpio and Aquarius use a stronger-co-lord comparison here, involving Mars/Ketu and Saturn/Rahu respectively. This is specific to the arudha convention; it does not replace Mars and Saturn in the ordinary seven-graha house-lord scheme. Alternative arudha conventions can therefore differ.

Arudha labels

Label House whose pada is shown
A1 Arudha lagna 1st
A2 2nd
A3 3rd
A4 4th
A5 5th
A6 6th
A7 Dara pada 7th
A8 8th
A9 9th
A10 10th
A11 11th
A12 Upapada 12th

Sign gives the resulting sign. House tells where that sign falls from the natal lagna. The A-number names the source house, not necessarily the house where the resulting pada lands.

Similar terms

A7 Dara pada is different from A12 Upapada. Neither is the Darakaraka role in the karaka table. An arudha pada is also different from a 3°20′ nakshatra pada.

A pada label does not establish reputation, wealth or a partner's character. Use its stated reference and convention within the wider reading.

See the chart and its tables on the Kundli page.
