Kundli guide

The fifth house in Kundli

The fifth house, or Putra bhava, concerns learning, judgment, children and sacred study. The common thread is not one guaranteed outcome but several topics that traditional readings examine through this house.

Learning and judgment

Learning includes taking in knowledge; judgment concerns how that knowledge is understood and used. This gives the fifth a different emphasis from the third house's repeated effort and the ninth house's teachers and guiding principles.

A connection between the fifth and tenth lords can bring learning into a question about work. It provides a basis for considering the professional use of an acquired skill, rather than identifying a profession from the fifth house alone.

Children and other fifth-house topics

Children form another traditional branch of the reading. An interpretation about learning should not be carried across into a fertility prediction. D7, or Saptamsa, supplies a separate divisional reference, whose placements must be read in their own chart.

A trinal house

The fifth is a trikona. With Cancer lagna it contains Scorpio and is ruled by Mars, which also rules the tenth house. That dual ownership gives Mars a traditionally favourable functional role for this lagna. It applies wherever Mars is placed; it does not mean Mars must occupy the fifth. See natural and functional roles.

Planets in the fifth house

These guides explain each placement and the conditions that qualify its interpretation.
