Divisional charts in Kundli

A divisional chart, or varga, assigns natal positions to another sign arrangement using a particular division rule. The D-number names the division. It is not a new observation of the sky at another time.

Each division has its own lagna and sign placements. A D9 or D10 house must be read from that division's lagna, not by copying the D1 house number.

These topic labels describe traditional use. They are not diagnoses, fertility assessments, inherited-trait measurements or guaranteed outcomes. Navamsa and Dashamsa have separate reading guides.

How the divisions differ

Many divisions split a sign into equal portions, but their sign assignments follow different rules. D2 here uses the Sun/Moon Hora scheme, assigning Cancer or Leo. D3 uses the sign itself, fifth and ninth for successive thirds. D30 uses unequal portions under the selected convention, so it should not be read as thirty identical one-degree segments.

D2 Hora is different from a planetary hour and from Hora lagna. Bhava chalit changes house assignment and is not an additional varga.

Assignment conventions

The conventions below identify the displayed scheme when another chart gives different divisional signs. A “starting sign” is followed in normal zodiac order through successive portions. Odd and even refer to zodiac sign numbers, beginning with Aries as 1.

Division Selected arrangement
D1 Original sidereal sign
D2 Two 15° halves: Leo then Cancer in odd signs; Cancer then Leo in even signs
D3 Three 10° portions: original sign, fifth and ninth from it
D4 Four 7°30′ portions: original sign, fourth, seventh and tenth
D7 Seven equal portions: start with the original sign in odd signs, its seventh in even signs
D9 Nine 3°20′ portions: start with the original sign for movable signs, its ninth for fixed signs and its fifth for dual signs
D10 Ten 3° portions: start with the original sign in odd signs, its ninth in even signs
D12 Twelve 2°30′ portions: start with the original sign
D16 Sixteen 1°52′30″ portions: start from Aries, Leo or Sagittarius for movable, fixed or dual signs
D20 Twenty 1°30′ portions: start from Aries, Sagittarius or Leo for movable, fixed or dual signs
D24 Twenty-four 1°15′ portions: start from Leo in odd signs, Cancer in even signs
D27 Twenty-seven 1°06′40″ portions: start from Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn for fire, earth, air or water signs
D30 Unequal portions, shown below
D40 Forty 0°45′ portions: start from Aries in odd signs, Libra in even signs
D45 Forty-five 0°40′ portions: start from Aries, Leo or Sagittarius for movable, fixed or dual signs
D60 Sixty 0°30′ portions: start with the original sign

For D30, odd signs assign 0°–5° to Aries, 5°–10° to Aquarius, 10°–18° to Sagittarius, 18°–25° to Gemini and 25°–30° to Libra. Even signs assign 0°–5° to Taurus, 5°–12° to Virgo, 12°–20° to Pisces, 20°–25° to Capricorn and 25°–30° to Scorpio. Each interval includes its beginning and excludes its end.

For example, a schematic position at 12° Taurus belongs to the Pisces portion of D30. It has crossed the end of the Virgo portion. This illustrates a division boundary without predicting an event.

Read across the table

The Point-by-division table lets the same graha or lagna be followed across D1 to D60. A sign name in a cell is the placement in that division, not a strength score. D1 and D9 chart panels show degrees; most smaller divisional diagrams omit them to keep the display readable.

Time sensitivity

A 30° sign has nine Navamsa portions of 3°20′, ten Dasamsa portions of 3°, and sixty Shashtiamsa portions of 0°30′. Finer boundaries can be crossed even when the D1 sign stays unchanged. This matters especially for the fast-moving lagna.

The uncertainty warnings check selected D1/D9 changes, not every boundary in all sixteen charts. Do not infer stability in D60 merely because no D1 warning appears.
