Kundli guide

The first house in Kundli

The first house, or Lagna bhava, concerns the person whose chart is being read: body, appearance, vitality and general disposition. It also provides the starting point from which the other eleven houses are counted.

The person and the rising point

Traditional readings distinguish the first house's broad description of the person from the Moon's association with inner responses and the Sun's association with authority. These factors can emphasise different qualities within the same chart.

A planet occupying the first house brings its own symbolism into this part of the reading. Mercury, for example, introduces themes of speech and learning. The sign and condition of Mercury determine how far that interpretation can be developed; occupancy alone is not an intelligence measurement.

Lagna, degree and lord

In a Cancer-lagna D1, Cancer is the first whole-sign house and the Moon is its ruler. The Moon remains the lagna lord wherever it is placed. A graha in Cancer occupies the first house but need not be exactly on the rising degree.

That distinction matters for directional strength and divisional charts. A changed birth minute may leave the rising sign unchanged while moving its degree across a divisional boundary. The lagna guide explains this sensitivity.

These guides explain each placement and the conditions that qualify its interpretation.
