Yogas in Kundli: meanings and conditions

A natal yoga is a named combination of chart factors. The Yogas section shows the rule used, the positions satisfying it and any qualification. It does not calculate a promised life result from the name.

This is different from the Nitya Yoga in the Birth day Panchang. Names such as Raja or Dhana belong to traditional classifications, not guarantees of authority or wealth.

Unless stated otherwise, houses below are D1 whole-sign houses from lagna. Kendra, trikona and other house groups have precise meanings. The benefic classification is conditional for the Moon and Mercury.

Pancha Mahapurusha

A graha must be in its own sign, Moolatrikona or exaltation and in a kendra from lagna. The five names are Ruchaka for Mars, Bhadra for Mercury, Hamsa for Jupiter, Malavya for Venus and Sasa for Saturn. The Sun, Moon and nodes do not receive these five names.

Moon and Sun references

Name Rule used here
Gajakesari Jupiter in a kendra counted from the Moon
Chandra-Mangala Moon and Mars share a sign
Adhi Each of the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon holds a benefic
Sunapha Eligible graha in the 2nd from the Moon only
Anapha Eligible graha in the 12th from the Moon only
Durudhara Eligible grahas on both those sides
Kemadruma Neither side holds an eligible graha; cancellation notes are separate
Veshi Eligible graha in the 2nd from the Sun only
Vasi Eligible graha in the 12th from the Sun only
Ubhayachari Eligible grahas on both those sides of the Sun
Budhaditya Sun and Mercury share a sign; Mercury's combustion is noted separately

For the Moon's neighbouring-sign rules, the Sun and nodes are excluded. For the Sun's neighbouring-sign rules, the Moon and nodes are excluded. “Neither side” does not mean the reference graha is alone in its own sign. The Kemadruma note reports the tool's kendra-occupancy cancellation condition without removing the original match.

Other combinations

Name Selected rule or distinction
Shubha Kartari Benefics alone flank lagna in houses 2 and 12
Papa Kartari Malefics alone flank lagna in houses 2 and 12
Amala A benefic in the 10th from lagna or Moon; the detail names the reference
Shakata Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th counted from Jupiter
Vasumati All grahas classified as benefic occupy upachaya houses from lagna
Saraswati Mercury, Jupiter and Venus in kendras, trikonas or house 2, with Jupiter well placed
Lakshmi Ninth lord in own sign, Moolatrikona or exaltation in a kendra/trikona, with lagna lord well placed
Kahala Fourth and ninth lords in different kendras from each other, with lagna lord well placed
Parvata Benefics in kendras and no malefic in houses 6 or 8
Daridra Eleventh lord in house 6, 8 or 12

“Well placed” in these checks includes own sign, Moolatrikona, exaltation or a naturally friendly ruler's sign. Each match needs its particular condition; these names do not all use one universal strength threshold.

Parivartana is an exchange of signs between two house lords. Dainya takes priority when a 6th, 8th or 12th house is involved; Khala applies when the 3rd is involved without those houses; Maha covers the remaining exchanges. The displayed house pair identifies the actual exchange.

Harsha, Sarala and Vimala are the reported Vipreeta Raja variants for the 6th, 8th and 12th lord respectively occupying a 6th, 8th or 12th house. Other schools impose additional conditions; the row states this tool's test.

Yogakaraka names one graha owning a kendra and a different trikona house. Raja yoga links their lords by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange. Dharma-Karmadhipati names a link between the ninth and tenth lords. Dhana yoga names supported links involving the second/eleventh and trinal lords; read the named grahas and houses in each detail.

Neecha Bhanga

Neecha Bhanga reports a cancellation condition for a debilitated graha. The reasons checked here include its sign lord in a kendra from lagna or Moon; the lord of its exaltation sign in such a kendra; its sign lord conjoining or aspecting it; or exaltation in Navamsa.

The lord of the exaltation sign is not necessarily the graha exalted in the occupied sign. Traditions use different variants. The listed reason identifies the selected one.

Cancellation is reported alongside the original condition. It does not rewrite the Dignity column or promise that difficulty turns into success.

Kala Sarpa and the node axis

The test here asks whether all seven grahas from Sun through Saturn lie strictly inside one half of the Rahu-Ketu axis. A graha exactly on either node boundary is excluded from a match. Either half can be reported; the detail names the direction and calls the Ketu-to-Rahu orientation Kala Amrita where that terminology is used.

The rule and interpretations differ among traditions. The match is not a forecast of danger or a requirement for a remedy. It is distinct from the Nabhasa Sarpa pattern below.

Nabhasa yogas

Nabhasa patterns use the seven grahas from Sun through Saturn. Nodes and outer planets do not fill their required positions. The page lists every matching pattern rather than applying one tradition's precedence order.

Family Name Pattern
Ashraya Rajju All seven in movable signs
Ashraya Musala All seven in fixed signs
Ashraya Nala All seven in dual signs
Dala Mala Benefics alone in at least three kendras
Dala Sarpa Malefics alone in at least three kendras
Akriti Gada Two adjoining kendras occupied by all seven
Akriti Sakata All seven in houses 1 and 7
Akriti Vihaga All seven in houses 4 and 10
Akriti Sringataka All seven in houses 1, 5 and 9
Akriti Hala All seven in one other trinal set: 2/6/10, 3/7/11 or 4/8/12
Akriti Kamala All seven in the four kendras
Akriti Vapi All seven within the panapharas or within the apoklimas
Akriti Yupa Within the four-house run starting at 1
Akriti Sara Within the four-house run starting at 4
Akriti Sakti Within the four-house run starting at 7
Akriti Danda Within the four-house run starting at 10
Akriti Nauka Within the seven-house run starting at 1
Akriti Kuta Within the seven-house run starting at 4
Akriti Chatra Within the seven-house run starting at 7
Akriti Chapa Within the seven-house run starting at 10
Akriti Chakra All seven within odd houses
Akriti Samudra All seven within even houses
Akriti Vajra Benefics in 1/7 and malefics in 4/10, without mixed occupancy
Akriti Yava Malefics in 1/7 and benefics in 4/10, without mixed occupancy
Akriti Ardhachandra Within a seven-house run starting outside a kendra
Sankhya Gola One occupied sign
Sankhya Yuga Two occupied signs
Sankhya Sula Three occupied signs
Sankhya Kedara Four occupied signs
Sankhya Pasa Five occupied signs
Sankhya Damini Six occupied signs
Sankhya Veena Seven occupied signs

For named sets such as Sakata or Kamala, each required house must actually be occupied. A run requires occupied endpoints; its interior can have gaps. Vapi, Chakra and Samudra require confinement to their group, not occupancy of every available house.

One Sankhya pattern necessarily appears because seven grahas occupy between one and seven signs. This is not evidence that every chart has an exceptional promised result. Nabhasa Sakata is separate from the Moon/Jupiter Shakata rule above.

Reading a match responsibly

“No yoga detected” means no match within this tool's supported main list. It does not rule out every combination used by other schools. A short list is not a worse life forecast than a long one. Read the rule, the matched positions, the qualifications and the wider chart context.

See the chart and its tables on the Kundli page.
