The twelve houses

What do the twelve houses describe?

The houses count twelve signs from the rising sign, and tradition gives each a set of topics. See one chart’s houses, and how a house keeps its topic.

01 · Twelve places from the lagna

Each house is a sign counted from the rising sign, and tradition gives each one a set of topics.

The houses are the birth chart’s own numbering of the zodiac. The first is the rising sign; the others follow in order. Each carries traditional topics, the subjects a reading looks for there.

02 · Same topic, different contents

The seventh house always stands for partnership; its sign and occupants depend on the chart.

Change the birth time by six and a half hours and the seventh house moves to another sign. The topic stays with the number; what is in the house changes.

A numbering with meanings attached

The houses are the birth chart’s own numbering of the zodiac. In the whole-sign system the rising sign is the first house and the others follow in zodiac order. Astronomy ends there: a house is a sign of the sky counted from the eastern horizon at one minute.

Astrology then attaches a set of traditional topics to each number. The common short forms, as the site’s houses guide lists them:

House Traditional topics
1 self and body
2 resources and speech
3 effort and siblings
4 home and foundations
5 learning and children
6 service, debts and disputes
7 partnership
8 continuity and disruption
9 teachers and guiding principles
10 work and public responsibilities
11 gains and associations
12 expenditure and withdrawal

These are compressed labels for longer traditional lists, and texts differ in emphasis. The house guides give each house in more detail, with differing interpretations side by side where they exist.

The topic stays with the number

In the fictional chart for 17:05 IST on 1 November 2026 in Delhi, Aries rises, so the seventh house is Libra, and the Sun, Mercury and Venus stand in it. Move the birth to 23:30 the same evening and Cancer rises. The seventh house is now Capricorn, and it is empty.

Both charts have a seventh house of partnership. What differs is the sign that house falls in and which planets, if any, occupy it. A reading of the house uses those, together with the house’s ruling planet, which is the ruler of its sign; how to read a planet through sign, house and nakshatra shows the planet side.

An empty house is normal: nine grahas cannot fill twelve houses, so every chart has at least three houses with nothing in them. Tradition still reads such a house through its sign and ruler.

Groups of houses

Houses are also grouped, and the groups overlap. The angular houses 1, 4, 7 and 10, the trinal houses 1, 5 and 9, and others each have their own uses in traditional rules; kendra, trikona, dusthana and upachaya shows the four main groups.
