Why is the first house not always Aries?
Signs are fixed parts of the zodiac; houses are counted from the rising sign. See one Sun and Moon fall into different houses as the birth time changes.
01 · Signs fixed, houses moving
The first house is whichever sign is rising, so the house numbers turn while the signs stay put.
The twelve signs are fixed divisions of the zodiac. In the whole-sign system the rising sign becomes the first house, the next sign the second, and so on round the wheel. Change the birth time and the same Sun and Moon land in different houses.
Two numberings of one circle
A birth chart wheel carries two sets of twelve. The signs are fixed 30° divisions of the sidereal zodiac, always in the same order from Aries to Pisces, as the twelve signs explains. The houses are a second numbering laid over them, and their starting point depends on the birth.
In the whole-sign system the site uses, the sign that was rising at birth, the lagna, is the whole of the first house. The next sign in zodiac order is the second house, and so on, until the sign just before the lagna becomes the twelfth. A chart with Aries rising numbers its houses the same way as the signs; every other rising sign shifts them.
The same sky at four times
Keep the birth place, Delhi, and the date, 1 November 2026, and move the time:

The Sun stays in Libra and the Moon in Cancer all evening, so their signs do not change. Their houses do, because the first house has moved. Counting is always forward in zodiac order from the lagna, the rising sign counted as one.
Why it matters for reading
House topics, such as partnership for the seventh house, are read from these numbers, so the same Libra Sun can sit in the first house of one chart and the seventh of another.
