Raksha Bandhan 2026 - date and muhurat

Raksha Bandhan 2026 falls on Friday, 28 August 2026.

Raksha Bandhan is observed on Purnima (the full Moon tithi) of the lunar month of Shravana. Tradition holds that the rakhi should not be tied during Bhadra - the Vishti karana - which occupies the first half of the Purnima tithi. The muhurat is the part of Purnima that is free of Bhadra.

Bhadra and the morning window

Under the daytime, Bhadra-free convention used here, the Delhi window runs from sunrise on 28 August to the end of Purnima. The computed table below gives the Purnima boundary in each city's clock; the linked daily page gives that city's sunrise.

Why the 28th and not the 27th

Purnima begins mid-morning on 27 August, with Bhadra occupying its first half through the afternoon and into the night. By sunrise on 28 August, Bhadra has ended while Purnima continues into the morning. That supports 28 August under this observance rule.

Sunrise depends on location. The tithi ends at the same astronomical instant worldwide, expressed in each city's timezone. Check the local sunrise, Purnima span and community's observance rule together.

The tithi begins and ends at a single moment worldwide. What differs is the local clock, so it can fall on a different date in your city.
