Amavasya dates 2026

Amavasya is the new Moon - the last tithi (30th) of each lunar month. Many Hindus observe a fast on Amavasya, particularly for ancestral rites (Pitru Tarpana). Specific Amavasyas carry special names depending on the lunar month they fall in.

2026 has an Adhik Maas (intercalary month) in Jyeshtha, so the year includes an extra Jyeshtha Adhika Amavasya beyond the usual 12.

Why some Amavasyas span two days

A tithi is the time for the Moon-Sun angle to advance 12°, which takes about 22-26 hours. When the Amavasya tithi is in effect at sunrise on two consecutive days, both days appear in the calendar. The first day is generally the day of observance for fasting; the second day continues the tithi until it transitions to Pratipada later in the day.

Above, four lunar months have two-day entries: Chaitra (Mar), Jyeshtha Adhika (Jun), Bhadrapada (Sep) and Kartika (Nov). For Diwali specifically, the main Lakshmi Puja falls on 8 Nov 2026 - the day when Amavasya is active at sunset.
